UEFA launches lottery for Euro 2012 tickets 15Feb11
The Euro 2012 football tournament has become the latest event to introduce an online lottery system to allocate tickets to fans. UEFA, the sport’s European governing body, opened the user registration process last week.
Fans from around Europe who want to see any of the international games taking place in Poland and Ukraine in the summer of 2012 must open a user account on the official ticket site, before being able to apply for tickets between the beginning and end of March. Once the registration process is complete, fans will be entered into a lottery to determine who gets tickets. The reason for this is that demand for the tickets is expected to outstrip availability by a significant margin.
1.4 million tickets are available in total for the 31 matches played across eight cities, though only three quarters of these will go on sale to the general public, with the rest reserved for VIP’s and sponsors.
Poland and Ukraine will be the first Eastern European nations to host the long-running international football competition. In order to combat the threat of counterfeit and illegitimately sold over-priced tickets, UEFA also plans to offer an official website dedicated to enabling fans to sell on and trade their tickets.
